Year 11 College Applications

Autumn Term

By now, all Year 11 students will hopefully have a couple of post-16 Open Events planned to visit, either at a college, sixth form or apprenticeship provider to inspire and motivate them and will be clearer about their options after Honley.

Support

To help our students with their post-16 options and exams, we’d like to share some key information and dates:

  • All Year 11 students receive a Career appointment with Mrs Hesselgrove, our Career Adviser from C&K Careers. These appointments allow students to discuss their ideas, career plans, and post-16 options.

  • Mrs Hesselgrove also offers a drop-in service during break and lunch on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday for students to ask questions or book appointments. We highly recommend students go to see her with any post-16 CEIAG queries, and she will be happy to help.

  • The C&K Careers website MyDirections provides a wide range of information (for young people and parents/carers) on post-16 qualifications, where qualifications are offered, Open Evenings, information about apprenticeships, CVs, etc. All Year 11 students have been issued with a username and password for MyDirections. We encourage parents and carers to take some time to look at the MyDirections website and the various opportunities available for their child.

Post-16 College Applications

The application process has changed for 2024-2025, and all students must apply directly to the colleges of their choice via the college/sixth form website.

The deadlines are:

Please note that applications must be completed by individual students with their families and not through their school. We are running a Parent and Carer Workshop on College Applications as part of our Year 11 Revision Workshops on Thursday 7 November 2024.

If your son/daughter is interested in attending a college outside the area, please check with Mrs Hesselgrove for the correct way to apply.

Apprenticeships

Applications to training providers for apprenticeships must be made directly to the training provider; however, an offer of a place does not guarantee an apprenticeship. The most important part of an apprenticeship is to gain employment, and the young person is responsible for securing it. Targeted support will be provided for students seeking apprenticeships in February/March 2025.

Entry requirements

Lastly, but as important, please be aware of all the entry requirements, which include grades, attendance (generally 95%+), punctuality and attitude to learning.

Any questions?

If you have any questions about the process, are looking to attend a college outside the area, or need help completing the application, please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs Hesselgrove (a.hesselgrove@honley.tlt.school).
